Build a Weekday Indian Meal Kit in Japan from Pantry Staples

A useful weekday meal kit starts with your calendar: how many dinners will you cook, and which ingredients can you use more than once? For Indian grocery shopping in Japan, a short list built around rice, dal and a few familiar spices can make that decision easier.

Here, “meal kit” means ingredients you choose and buy separately. Start with what is already in your cupboard, then fill the gaps. You do not need a new spice collection for every dinner.

Start with the evenings you will actually cook

Choose two cooking evenings and one evening when you want a simpler option. Write the dishes down before choosing pack sizes.

For example, your plan could be rice with dal, rice with a vegetable curry, and rice with a ready-to-eat accompaniment. This is a planning example, rather than a complete recipe or a promise that one basket feeds a fixed number of people. Follow the recipes and packet instructions you use at home.

Keep vegetables on a separate list so you can decide what to buy near you. Check whether you already have the oil, salt and other ingredients required by each recipe.

Build the basket around four pantry choices

Choice An example to check at Star Indo What to decide before ordering
Rice Daawat Devaaya Basmati Rice, 1 kg Do you need rice, or is there already enough at home?
Dal Masoor Dal (Red Lentil Dal), 500 g Does your chosen recipe call for masoor dal?
Whole spice Cumin Seeds (Whole Jeera), 100 g Do you need whole seeds rather than ground cumin?
Ground spice Turmeric Powder (Haldi), 100 g Is turmeric already on your spice shelf?

These selected variants were shown as available when checked on 6 November 2026. Availability can change; check the product page before ordering. Pack weights describe the products, not the amount to use in one meal.

Rice and dal give the list a clear starting point. Cumin and turmeric are separate ingredients, so keep both names on your list when a recipe needs both. Add other spices only when your chosen dish calls for them.

Turn the same shopping list into different dinners

For the first cooking evening, use your preferred masoor dal recipe and prepare rice alongside it. The masoor product listing identifies it for dal, soups or curries; it does not provide a complete cooking method.

For another evening, choose a vegetable dish that uses spices you already own. That lets you reuse ingredients from the basket without buying a different blend for each meal. Buy any extra recipe ingredients separately.

Keep one optional backup on the list

If your plan includes a ready-to-eat accompaniment, one listing to check is MTR Ready To Eat Dal Fry 300 g, 1 pkt.

Read the exact packet's ingredients, allergen information, preparation and storage directions before choosing it. A 300 g pack is not automatically a one-person serving. If information you need is missing online, ask Star Indo before ordering. Do not assume its ingredients match a homemade dal recipe.
